2012 Predictions

I’ve heard more and more people talking about the year 2012, not just people within my age, but even elder people. Everyone is fearing what will become of us and the planet Earth once 2012 comes around. Honestly, I don’t believe that the end of the world will be that year, but it freeks me out to know how many people actually do. Many people are putting their faith and lives in the hand of that Mayan theory where all the planets will align and we’ll eventually explode, or something like that. It just confuses me and I fail to comprehend why people are so oblivious, and I’m pretty sure NASA feels the same way I do too. They recently launched a web resource saying that nothing would occur in 2012, stating that even if the planets were to align they would have no significant effect on us.

Koran Burning

In the smallest town of the world, Gainseville, to be exact, Pastor Terry Jones planned to burn a stack of Korans on the 9th anniversary of 9-11. It’s a huge controversy, and everyone has been talking about it. I’m a Christian myself, and I stand up for what I believe in like any other person on the face of this Earth, but I also believe that there is a limit to what we can do. I know I wouldn’t like it if a person burned something that I held sacred in my heart. I don’t ebelieve in disrespecting another religion and I wonder why so many people actually stood up for something so abominable?!!! Why can’t we all just be friends? L

Gay Rights

Homosexual rights has been a controversial issue since FOREVER!!! In some states gay marriage has been approved, such as, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire. The first state to actually recognize gay marriage was Iowa, where same-sex marriage became effective on April 24, 2009. I know everyone in this class has an opinion and a side, as for me, I don’t believe in same-sex marriage, but I know that the United States of America is a free country. I hold my beliefs close to my heart, but as I stated this is a free country, and whats the point of living in a free country where some people are prohibited to do as they wish? I mean it’s their lives not ours, so shouldn’t homosexuals be able to do what they want?

Embryonic stem cell research

We’re all humans, and being born as one, we’re meant to die one day too. Death is a stage of life that many people have different viewpoints of , many embrace it and see it as a beuatiful part of life, while others live in fear of death. As I’ve grown up I’ve seen the development that this society has had, some of them good, and some of them not so good. Embryonic stem cell research is one of those developments that can be seen as good or not so good. It requires the
etraction of stem cells from an embryo known as a blastcys, one which contains about 100 cells, and is mostly made up of stem cells. In order for the extraction to occur though the embryo must be destructed. It’s fascinating to see the developments of modern science as well as the development in health science. It is not fascinating however, to see the costs of destroying one life to save another. Stem cell research has it’s pros and cons, therefore making it a controversy throughout our society.

Designer Babies?

With the advancement of our culture and the advancement of techonology within it, now parents can choose the sex of their babies!!! It used to be a 50/50 chance of having either hansome boy or a beautiful girl, but now parents can choose the sex they want?!! I honeslty feel that our genration is nuts, we don’t allow the natural process of life take place, but rather we play around with it. Within a decade or two it may even be possible to choose the hair color, the eye color, how tall the baby will be, etc!!! To me it’s crazy, but it may also help with helath problems, so just as these other controversies, having a designer baby has it’s up and downs, it twists and turns, and its pros and it’s cons.
